Why did the bible get so many followers..and what would have to happen for a NEW BIBLE/religion to overtake it?

The bible is a book that has gotten so many followers over the years, of all the religions out there. Was there something cultural that happened to cause this? If so, what kind of event would have to happen in order for the bible to get squashed and a new bible/religion to overtake it?
