Why does Hydrogen gas have a smell from HCl+Al (hydrochloric acid plus aluminum)?

When I added the Al to the HCl it created a gas (supposed to be H2) but it was not, it had an almost sulfur-like smell and burned the nostrils a bit. The Al came from Aluminum foil.
